Kill Your Envy
/
Envy like jealousy only makes the way you look at others worse. They are not the same thing but go hand in hand most times. I try to tackle both in this one.
Envy:
- What it is: Wanting what someone else has (possessions, skills, qualities, etc.).
- Focus: The desired thing or situation.
- Example: “I’m envious of her new car.”
Jealousy:
- Feeling: Fear of losing something valuable (a position, achievement, or recognition) to someone else.
- Focus: The threat to your own accomplishment or status, not a specific person (though a person might be seen as the source of the threat).
- Example: “I felt jealous when my colleague received the promotion I thought I deserved.”
Difference:
- Misinterpreted Envy: People might think you’re envious because you desire the recognition your colleague received (the promotion).
- Actual Jealousy: However, your jealousy stems from the fear of losing your own standing (not getting promoted) due to someone else’s success.
Key Difference:
- Envy is about wanting something you don’t have.
- Jealousy is about protecting something you already have.
